“Stern: the Man, the Gang, and the State” (2024, 46 min) Directed by Hossam Sarhan
Avraham Stern was the leader of the Stern Gang, one of the Jewish armed groups that fought the British Mandate in Palestine in the 1930s and early ’40s. This film tells his story through his own son and a range of contemporary historians. It presents both pro- and anti-Zionist sides of a controversial narrative – who Stern was, how he set up and ran the Stern Gang and how he led it in fighting the British administration and Palestinians with the ultimate aim of founding a Jewish state.

NEW Meditation opportunity:
On Shabbat morning there will be a silent meditation from 9:10 -9:45 a.m. preceding the chanting. Plan to arrive by 9 a.m. to the main sanctuary. Doors will be locked at 9:10 to protect the silent space.
At 10:00 the Chanting Service begins. The service will be contemplative as we take time to enter the liturgy through chant, then pause in the silence long enough to allow for an unfolding of possibilities and to develop the skillful practice that allows for Shabbat consciousness to flourish.

Albuquerque Folk Festival First Sunday Sing-Along meets on the first Sunday of EVERY month from 4-6pm in Beit B’racha.
We go around the circle, each person picking a song from Rise Up Singing or Rise Again Songbook (we have several)
We sing songs of hope and peace. And some songs of uncertainty and concern for our friends and fellow human beings. And love songs. And just fun. You pick the songs. We’ll all sing together.

July 16 2025 will mark 80 years since the start of the nuclear weapons era, with detonation about 200 miles south of Albuquerque at the Trinity Test Site, an event which is still affecting many New Mexicans. Now the whole world is closer than ever to a nuclear war, accidents, or other disaster being triggered. On July 12, Nahalat Shalom will host a kickoff event for Back from the Brink NM, to bring action and awareness to our current dangers and how we can prevent nuclear war and abolish nuclear weapons. Be there Saturday, July 12, beginning at 6:30 pm, to learn what’s happening now and what we can do about it. Watch this space for more information and volunteer opportunities.

On Sunday, July 13, the Interfaith Remembrance of the Trinity Test will continue efforts to educate, network, and strengthen our resolve to address this toxic legacy and work for a world without nuclear weapons. This annual interfaith remembrance , initiated by Archbishop Wester, will also be in Albuquerque this year, at St Pius X School.

Celebrate Shabes (Shabbat) JOY in-person in our sanctuary. The participatory klezmer Shabes service from 6:30-7:45 PM can be danced to and includes prayers from Kabbalat Shabbat and the Ma’ariv services. We will also observe the candle lighting/blessing, Mourners’ Kaddish, blessing for healing, Kiddush and Hamotzee. The service will be followed by a vegetarian-kosher pescatarian potluck dinner at 7:45pm and recreational Jewish dancing to a klezmer music jam from 8:15-9 PM. Everyone is welcome to all or any part of the evening’s events.

The participatory klezmer Shabes service from 6:30-7:45 PM can be danced to and includes prayers from Kabbalat Shabbat and the Ma’ariv services. We will also observe the candle lighting/blessing, Mourners’ Kaddish, blessing for healing, Kiddush and Hamotzee. The service will be followed by a vegetarian-kosher pescatarian potluck dinner at 7:45pm and recreational Jewish dancing to a klezmer music jam from 8:15-9 PM. Everyone is welcome to all or any part of the evening’s events.

With only knowledge of the aleph-bet you can delve into one of the most widely studied Jewish texts and learn how to break down the meaning of text on a daf (page). Through yeshivah style instruction, we will break down a section of Berachot in the original Hebrew and Aramaic with an emphasis on building dictionary skills, understanding of the structures of rabbinic arguments, and feeling a sense of ownership over our own places in the Rabbinic tradition. Classes will meet for three hours once a week on Sunday afternoons from from 1pm-4pm. REGISTER HERE!

The weather is warm, so let’s enjoy our time together out in the beautiful (and air conditioned) Nahalat Shalom Sanctuary, as we circle up for a night of nigunim at Nahalat Shalom that is hosted by community member Adam Horowitz. A nigun (meaning "melody" in Hebrew) is a wordless tune, sung in repetition and with devotion, to stir the soul and take us where words cannot. Drawing from the wellspring of Jewish mystical tradition, we'll sing nigunim new and old. No prior experience required! If there are nigunim that you know and would enjoy sharing, please feel free to bring and to teach!

NEW Meditation opportunity:
On Shabbat morning there will be a silent meditation from 9:10 -9:45 a.m. preceding the chanting. Plan to arrive by 9 a.m. to the main sanctuary. Doors will be locked at 9:10 to protect the silent space.
At 10:00 the Chanting Service begins. The service will be contemplative as we take time to enter the liturgy through chant, then pause in the silence long enough to allow for an unfolding of possibilities and to develop the skillful practice that allows for Shabbat consciousness to flourish.

June 1st 2025 for Shavuot: A First Annual Meeting of Humanity (not just numbers)
We celebrate the giving of our Torah at Mt Sinai, the first harvest, and firsts of repairs (Tikkun). This year we want to open up this holiday to our greater spiritual community. Over dinner, some of NS finest will introduce and guide us through Shavuot. Our guests will be invited to join in, and welcome their
wisdom informed by their studies. We will offer them shmi'ah shelanu (our hearing) and l'ibenu (our hearts).
We are also welcoming our new Rabbi Intern, Josie Felt, who will be joining Nahalat Shalom's finest, so we may all meet her and that she will be able to meet our greater spiritual community. We hope she can count on you along her journey, as a source of wisdom and someone she can count on for guidance with the local community.

Queer Shabbat is a monthly ritual space for reflection, connection, grounding in the sacred cycles of Jewish time. This is a space for self-identified Queer Jews and their loved ones to gather.
