Pot luck vegetarian dinner with songs and prayers in Ladino, Hebrew and Spanish led by Stephanie Sofie Shefia Cohen, and a bilingual (English/Spanish) poetry reading with an opportunity for personal reflections.
This month we return to our series on Karaite poets with a poem by Moses ben Abraham Dar’i, regarded as the greatest poet of Medieval Karaism.

Written, directed, and fully funded by Palestinians, the film follows a young Palestinian freedom fighter in the occupied West Bank. Implicated in the shooting of an Israeli soldier, he is forced to act as an informant. The film looks at the fragility of personal relationships and the moral ambiguity of survival under occupation.

The participatory klezmer Shabes service from 6:30-7:35 PM can be danced to and includes prayers from Kabbalat Shabbat and the Ma’ariv services. We will also observe the candle lighting/blessing, Mourners’ Kaddish, blessing for healing, Kiddush and Hamotzee. The service will be followed by a vegetarian-kosher pescatarian potluck dinner at 7:45pm and recreational Jewish dancing to a klezmer music jam from 8-9 PM. Everyone is welcome to all or any part of the evening’s events.

Join Rabbi Josie, Cantor Beth, the Community Klezmer band & Rikud dancers for our Simchat Torah Service & Hakafot: (dancing). It’s a joyous holiday of beginnings and endings and the continuity of our stories as we read the last lines from Deuteronomy in the Torah and then the first lines of Bereshit. Dance the seven Hakafot (circuits/ dances) with Rikud to live music played by our own Community klezmer band.

The service will be contemplative as we take time to enter the liturgy through chant, then pause in the silence long enough to allow for an unfolding of possibilities and to develop the skillful practice that allows for Shabbat consciousness to flourish.

Celebrate Shabes (Shabbat) JOY in-person in our sanctuary. The participatory klezmer Shabes service from 6:30-7:35 PM can be danced to and includes prayers from Kabbalat Shabbat and the Ma’ariv services. We will also observe the candle lighting/blessing, Mourners’ Kaddish, blessing for healing, Kiddush and Hamotzee. The service will be followed by a vegetarian-kosher pescatarian potluck dinner at 7:45pm and recreational Jewish dancing to a klezmer music jam from 8-9 PM. Everyone is welcome to all or any part of the evening’s events.

The Jewish holiday of Sukkot is a harvest festival—an opportunity to give thanks to the earth, to invite in ancestors and guests, and to dwell together in peace amidst all the precarities of our world. All are welcome to join this family-friendly outdoor ceremony, which will include time for: art-making and decorating the Sukkah; expansive, multi-religious prayer; learning about one another’s communities; and welcoming in ancestors of peace.
If inspired, bring food to share for a vegetarian potluck!
Come meet up with friends and partners across lineages to explore the history and practice of decolonial pilgrimage. Rabbi Lynn Gottlieb will share from her new toolkit on this theme to spark inspiration and continued conversation to inform a March 2027 Peace Walk in Albuquerque. All are welcome.
A note for Nahalat Shalom members: If you’d like to join, please make an effort to also bring a friend from another faith or cultural tradition.
Nahalat Shalom’s Community Klezmer Band rehearses on most Sundays from 3-5pm. Rikud dancers often rehearse with the band and practice dancing to live Klezmer & Jewish folk music.
This is a Special rehearsal for current band members for the Simchat Torah service on Saturday October 3rd. Regular rehearsals for the fall/ winter season begin on Sunday, October 18th.
The Klezmer band & Rikud also host the monthly Freylekher Shabbes held on the first Friday of every month.
All ages and levels of musicians and singers are welcome in the band. You must know the basics of your instrument to play or sing in the band (no drums or percussion please). Sheet music and professional instruction is provided by Nahalat Shalom’s Cantor & music director Beth Cohen. If you do not read music, it is recommended that you record the rehearsals.
All ages and levels of dancers are always welcome: no pre-skills are needed.

Albuquerque Folk Festival Schedule
The Albuquerque Folk Festival runs from 10:00 AM to 9:00 PM Saturday, September 26, 2026, at the National Hispanic Cultural Center (1701 Fourth St SW, Albuquerque, NM 87102).
Klezmer events:
1-1:50 - Klezmer music workshop given by Cantor Beth - learn a klezmer tune or two! In workshop tent #2 - west of the main performance building.
3-3:50 - "High Dezert Klezmer & Judaic Band" performs at the musical welcoming tent at the entrance - near tickets/ admission.
5-5:50 - The Nahalat Shalom Community Klezmer Band & Rikud Dancers give a klezmer & Jewish folk dance workshop in Salon Ortega - come dance and cheer on our band and dance troupe!

Queer Shabbat is a monthly ritual space for reflection, connection, grounding in the sacred cycles of Jewish time. This is a space for self-identified Queer Jews and their loved ones to gather. We will be hosting hybrid Queer Shabbat in Bayt B'racha IN-PERSON and also on ZOOM; Please come masked! Whether you are attending virtually or in person, you're invited to bring: songs, poetry, movement, creative activities, and meditations from your heart. Bring (vegetarian) food to eat yourself or to share while we chat after the service (some people may choose to unmask in order to eat together). Ritual items and challah welcome.

An Elul Prayer Lab, a reverence playground, a space of practice in full voiced, whole hearted, embodied prayer. What is possible in the collective when we diversify and deepen our understanding of what prayer is, and what it is capable of. In this three week series we will explore the role of kabbalistic devecut meditation practice, image and creativity, and motion/dance/voice might play in our high holiday prayer practice and in our lives. What is the essence of prayer so that we are praying with our feet in the street, with our heart making art, with our hands healing lands, with our words clinging to the blessed holy one, in the ten thousand ways we kneel and kiss the ground. You're invited to explore these questions and more over three Thursday afternoons together:

Alavados Holy Days Ensemble rehearses during August and September (and sometimes October) for Nahalat Shalom’s High Holiday observances of Selichot, Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur & Simchat Torah.
The ensemble is open for all members of Nahalat Shalom who wish to sing or play an instrument that they are skilled on (no percussion or drums please) for the community’s high holiday services. Rehearsal attendance is a requirement to be able to play/ sing for a service.
