We’re starting at 6:00 pm this month, and ending at 7:30 because of the amazing Sefardic concert taking place at Nahalat Shalom tonight. Singer, composer, trombonist, keyboardist Nani Vazana learned Ladino from her Moroccan Grandmother. Her concert starts at 8:00pm and is not to be missed. Save by getting tickets in advance. This month’s bilingual reading features “Moroccan Wedding”, translated to Spanish by Héctor Contreras López and Marciel Romero. Everyone will have an opportunity to share their reactions to this great poem.

We will read "If We Must Die," by Claude McKay. Born in Jamaica in 1890, McKay was one of the most important poets of the Harlem Renaissance. He died in Chicago in 1948.

Poem: Prosopopea

We’ve got songs and prayers in Hebrew, Ladino and English, and Sephardic poetry and discussion. Bring your whole self to this participatory evening!

We are very excited to welcome two special guests from UNM: Professor Paulo Dutra and Fátima Cordeiro, as we begin a new series of poetry written in Portuguese. The first poet in this series is Bento Teixeira Pinto, who was born in Porto, Portugal, ca. 1561, and died in Lisbon, ca. 1618. He spent many years of his life in Brazil, where he wrote the poetry book by which he is known today, Prosopopea (1601). Paulo and Fátima will join us to read excerpts of the original Portuguese version of the poem.

This month we will be meeting on Zoom only and especially invite our out of town friends to participate. To our friends who are accustomed to attending in person, please hop on Zoom this month! In April we will return to our hybrid format.
